Glossary of Water Polo Terms

A

Attacking Team
The team having control of the ball, trying to score a goal. The team considered as the "offense." In the case of a "free" ball, then it would be the team last having possession of the ball.

Attack Referee
The referee officiating the play of the hole man, his/her guard and those players located in the area between the hole man and himself/herself.

B


Ball Under
To take or hold the ball underwater when, through body contact, the player in possession is either forced to take the ball underwater or while purposely taking the ball underwater, is contacted by a defender on the shoulder, arm or hand holding the ball.

Brutality
When a player deliberately goes out of his/her way to hit, kick or strike towards an opposing player.

C

Corner Throw
A free throw taken by the closest player on the offensive team on the 2-yard marker by the side of the pool where the defensive team has caused the ball to pass over the goal line but not between the goal posts.

Control of the Ball
When an offensive player is not contacting the ball, but the ball is on the water in front of the horizontal plane of his/her shoulders.

Counter Attack
When the ball is turned over from one team to the other, the tema that is going offense is sprinting up the pool trying to gain an advantage over the defense. This is called running a counter attack.

D

Dead Time
The time laspse that occurs between the awarding of a free pass and when the ball is actually put into play. (A free pass must be put into play within three seconds).

Dead-Time Foul
A foul occurring when players on the oppising teams commit a rule violation at the same instant.

Defensive Team
The team trying to prevent a goal from being scored by the offense

Double Foul
A foul occrring when players on opposing teams commit a rule violation at the same instant.

Dry Pass
The ball is passed without touching the water

E

Ejection Area
The space in the corner of the pool, opposite the scoring table, where a player removed from the game for a first/second personal foul waits until signaled back into the game by the scorer.

Ejection Foul
A personal foul committed by a player where the referee removes that player from the game for 30 seconds.

Extra-Man Advantage
When one team has more players in the game than its opponent; i.e., 6 on 5 ,6 on 4 etc.

F

Face-Off
When a player from each team lines up side-by -side, facing the referee, and races for the ball once it is dropped into the water. This procedure is carried out when the referee cannot determine which team should put the ball back into play.

Field Player
Player that can swim from 2-meter line to 2-meter line without penalty or limitation, but not having goalkeeper privilages.

Flats (Drivers)
The two positions to the right and left of the middle driver on the top line.

4-Meter Area
The rectangular area existing across the pool width 4 meters from each goal line.

4-Meter Line
A straight line at each end of the pool that goes across the pool width, measuring 4 meters from each goal line.

4-Meter/Penalty Shot
If a foul is made upon an offensive player while within the scope of the goal and in the process of shooting a penalty shot is awarded. This is a one-on-one with the goalie, the shot is taken from the 4-meter line at the center of the goal. The defender who commits the foul is awarded a major foul but is not ejected from the game. If the offense misses the goal, play continues.

Free Pass
When a foul occcurs of when the ball has been knocked out of the pool, a free pass is awarded. The player who's pass it is must put the ball in play within 3 seconds. The ball is considered in play as soon as the player releases the ball either with a pass, swimming or tossing it up and catching it.

Fronting the Hole
The hole guard defends between the hole set and his/her team, rather than between the hole set and the goal. The defense must be pressing out on the offense.

G


Goal
When a ball passes between the goal posts completely over the goal line. One point is scored.

Goal Line
A straight line at each end of the pool which marks the end boundaries of the playing field. They are 30 meters apart.

Goal Throw
A free throw taken by the goalkeeper when an offensive player causes the ball to go over the goal line, but not between the goal posts.

Goalie
A defensive player who guards the goal.

H

Hole
The area anywhere inside the Penalty Throw Zone where the 2-meter man sets up offensive play.

Hole Defender
A defensive player guarding the Hole Man.

Hole Man
An offensive player playing in the hole.

I

Illegal Player
An extra player, a player who has received a third personal foul or a player who has been ejected from the game.

Inside Water
When there is no defender between an offensive player and the goalie.

J

K

Kick-Out/Ejection
When a player is ejected from the game (for 20 seconds, a goal is scored or until the defense recovers the ball) for commiting a major foul.

L

Live-Time Foul
Any foul committed while the ball is in play.

M

Man-Down
An ejection has occurred and the offense has a 6 on 5 advantage.

Man-Up
An ejection has occurred and the offense has a 6 on 5 advantage.

N

No Foul
A defender will call for this when it is believed that they are about to make a stal, or as a reminder to another player that no foul is necessary, just apply steady pressure.

No Hole
The setter is vulnerable (could be due to any number of reasons) and the ball should not be sent in until called for.

O

Objections
A written complaint by a coach in regards to a rule violationnot correctly called or not called by the referee which in effect could determine the outcome.

Offense

Offensive Foul
A foul committed by a member of the offensive team during live-time or dead-time.

Ordinary Foul
When holding/obstructing, sinking or pulling back an opponenet who is not in contact with the ball or who has an offensive advantage. The penalty for an ordinary foul is a free throw.

Outside Shooter
Any offensive player on the top line, i.e. point, or flats.

P

Passing Lanes
An imaginary line between two offensive players along which the ball would be passed.

Penalty Throw
A direct shot at the goal by an offensive player on command of the referee from a distance of 4-meters from the goal.

Perimeter Referee
The offical having primary responsibility for calling fouls around the perimeter of the scoring area.

Personal Foul
A major foul where a player is removed from the field of play for a definite time period or remains in the game with a personal foul against him, recorded in the scorer's book. Accumulation of 3 personal fouls against the same player removes that player from the game.

Playing the Ball
Legal moves by a player, avoiding fouling, in an attempt to score a goal for his/her own team.

Playing the Man
An illegal move by a player when, in an attempt to get to the ball, he/she holds, sinks or pulls back an opponent.

Point
The top center driver on offense.

Possesion of the Ball
When a player holds or controls the ball.

Press Defense
the defense plays very tight to the offense in an attempt to prevent or make more difficult a pass or drive by the offense, and to slow down the offensive play.

Pumping the Ball
When a Potential shooter has the ball and fakes shots at the goal.

R

Rear Backs
When an incoming driver abruptly stops and pops up for a pass from the setter.

Release/Wing-Out
After a ball has been turned over and there is a free pass (particularly from the goalie) one or two players on the offensive team, must, while swimming upcourt, must make a cut and look back for the pass from the goalie, in order to help move the ball upcourt (often the goalie will call for a release if no one has looked back for the pass in time).

Release Pass
Passes which are not going to be shot.

Scoring Area
The Penalty Throw Zone Area

Set/Hole Set
The position of hole set is the player who runs the offense. The call of "hole set" is the setter is in position and is ready for the ball to be passed in.

Slough(er)
When a defender drops off the offensive player to help guard the hole, usually looking ot steal the bad pass.

Stalling/Delay of Game
When the offense takes too long to advance the ball up court. This may be done unconsciously i.e. there is no open player to pass to, or consciously, i.e. it's the end of a close game and the offense is trying to have control of the ball as much as possible. Want to avoid being called for this.

Strong Side
Side of the pool where the ball is.

Stunt(ing)
Usually in conjunction with a slogh. A defensive player, in order to facilitate the slough, will guard their own player and, if the ball is passed to the offensive player bieng sloughed on, will make a movement to the player with the ball in order to apply some pressure.

Sudden Death
A period of play taking place when a game is still tied after the deep pool's single overtime period or a shallow bottom pool's double overtime period in which the first team to score is delcared the winner.

Switch
A defending player will call for a teammate to switch on the respecitve people that they are guarding.

T

Technical Foul
Any infraction of the rules not committed personally against an opponent.

Top Line
THe line of the offense furthest from the goal usually referred to as near as the 4 meter mark.

35-Second Clock
The visible timepiece responsible for informing a team as to how long they may control the ball before attmepting a shot. A shot shall be attempted within a 35 second time frame.

Turn-Over
When control of the ball goes to the opposing team due to some type of error on offense.

2-Hands
To catch, hold, grip, or touch the ball at the same instant whith both hands/arms.

2-Meter Area
The rectangular space existing across the pool width 2 meters from each goal ine.

2-Meter Line
Straight line at each end of the pool that goes across the pool width, measuring 2 meters from each goal line.

U

Unsportsmanlike Conduct (Misconduct)
When a player, coach or spectator refuses to play by the rules or acts in an unbecoming way that is not an ethical, fair, honorable individual, including deciet, disrespect or vulgarity.

V

W

Weak or Weak Side
refers to the side of the pool where the ball is not.

Wet Pass
The ball is passed on the water.

Wings/Deep Wings
The two positions to the right and left of the setter nearest the 2 meter line.
